Deborah Lewis has coached me in the Alexander Technique for many months now.  The results are very positive, for example; I have had  neck issues  for many years  the Occiput and Atlas would go out and I was seeing a chiropractor at least twice a month to fix them.  After four or five lessons with Deborah those issues have been resolved. What used to be my homework from Deborah is now my natural daily routine. I feel like I’m taller and much more relaxed.  The Alexander Technique is very effortless and simple with very positive noticeable results for me.  Believe me, I am too lazy to do anything that takes a lot of effort or is too complicated for my body. Deborah has a masterful way of delivering the lessons and is very thorough. The Alexander Technique is a perfect fit for me.

Working with Deborah is always the highlight of my week. Not only does she open your eyes to the teachings of the Alexander Technique, but she creates an environment where you can be at ease, let go of tension, and truly open yourself up to a new way of living. Each lesson with Deborah left me feeling enlightened and empowered to move more mindfully through my day. Cannot say enough positive things about this wonderful practitioner.

This last week I asked my landlord for assistance with a situation with other residents. They in turn asked me to wait. Normally this would have flown all over me and I would have been prepared for battle at the utterance of the word “wait.” Instead I found I had peace about the situation immediately. Instruction in your class has shown me a nuanced flavor to ‘wait’. I now consider what will be coming up next, in the wait you instruct before beginning a movement. This means my internal reminder to wait or stop before going into movement translated from my body to my emotional reaction. I did not hear wait as a noun that I would have to endure. It was a constructively creative challenge to me to see what is coming after the wait. There is plenty for me to do in this wait time with other residents, and I am thankful to you for giving me tools that translate beyond the expectation I had in your class of healing brokenness in my physical body. Expectations which have been met and exceeded by your careful guidance.

As a landscaper my day-to-day routine is filled with opportunities to pull a muscle or do more serious harm to my body. “Up and away” has become a little mantra and by implementing the core principles of the alexander technique I’ve been able to go about my work, efficiently and with an ease that continues to surprise me. What was once a deliberate practice has become second-nature and when I notice myself slipping into old habits I am able to pause and make minor adjustments with very little  effort, and I continue to be encouraged by how I feel at the end of the day.

I became interested in Alexander Technique because a close friend of mine told me it could improve my singing as well as loosen up my back, not to mention I heard Paul McCartney had tried it. After only a few lessons with Deborah, I noticed my voice becoming fuller, deeper, and easier to hear without much amplification. She helped me to focus on freeing up my neck so that I was actually singing, and it has really made a difference. As a side note, I have also practiced quite a bit independently on singing in key and with the beat. That being said, Alexander lessons have given me a strong vocal foundation to work with. A nice side benefit is that I have more energy to do things like go out at the end of the day or play for longer amounts of time with my band. Deborah has been doing such a great job at teaching me to replace bad habits with good ones so I can continue to grow as a singer, and as a person.”

About six months ago, my back became painfully unreal for me, pain in transitions, so much pain. I examined my actions trying to resettle my body and wasn’t able to find what was causing the hurt. Dr John, my healer friend, just kept adjusting me and then almost immediately the pain was back just as strong. I did healing work to release those feelings and had some success, but still something was wrong in my body. I remember my old pal Deborah who had done something to aid her badly hurt back, which had stopped her dancing career. What did she do? I wanted to ask her and decided to take a session from her. I wasn’t sure what kind of therapy she was doing, but trusting her was enough, and so I went. It turned out to be the ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE.  This session changed my life. Really. Deborah directed me to stand up from a chair and to sit down in a chair. Pretty simple work. I had such huge revelations from her skilled and guiding hands and dear conversations, which are the skills of a good therapist. We did work for an hour, wide awake work, deeply healing work. I’ve done ten sessions so far and look forward to doing more. I see my pain, and where it comes from… now I have the ability to relax in a stationary pose, to relax while climbing stairs to relax in life, to relax. We find our stresses in so many ways, and if we can find them, we can heal them. Let’s carry on with so much more energies in this wild world!!

I love learning the Alexander Technique with Deborah. She has a light but authoritative touch (literally and figuratively) and is an excellent teacher. I know I am standing, sitting, walking, running and moving with more height, space, stability and power, and our lessons have helped alleviate lower back, knee, and arm pain. Consciously integrating the elements of our lessons into my daily life has been most gratifying (I often hear Deborah’s voice encouraging me to be aware of my body and address my learned habits — neck free!), and I look forward to continuing my practice with her. Thank you, Deborah.

My Alexander lessons with Deborah proved to be highly worthwhile and of value to me. I feel in just 15+ sessions I began to undo some of the habits responsible for the severe tension I’d felt for so long at the base of my head, top of my neck. I worked with Deborah for 6-8 weeks, 2 sessions a week and it was in the regularity of showing up to the work that I began to bring a new awareness to the way that I move. Deborah is a skilled teacher and obviously believes fully in the work. I highly encourage anyone who is seriously interested in restoring the body’s natural alignment and undoing the age old habits that result in chronic pain, however mild or severe to work with Deborah on a regular basis. I feel comforted to know about this work and to know that I can go back to work with Deborah in the future if and when I need it!

My 17 year old son had a terrible accident, breaking his ankle while skate boarding and had to have surgery three times. He had a lot of pain and had a hard time walking. He started studying the Alexander Technique with Deborah Lewis as part of his recovery process, and worked with her for over a year while he was in recovery.  We believe that our son healed from the injury and surgeries much more quickly because of his work with Deborah. He really enjoyed his twice weekly lessons, and in addition he found the technique made him feel more at ease and calm in general. Now he is back to having full use of his ankle, and he uses the technique while doing all kinds of challenging physical activities. He told me that it helps him to think clearly in the middle of a difficult set of moves in gymnastics, or when he is rock climbing. He says that he uses the technique in many situations in his life, and I have noticed that his posture is also greatly improved through the Alexander work.  Deborah Lewis is a very warm, kind and dedicated Alexander Technique teacher and I highly recommend her.

I have been a gymnast for 9 years, and I have always had a problem with throwing myself backwards when I tumbled, as opposed to going straight up. Over the past year I have been doing the Alexander Technique, and over that period of time, I have been able to overcome that problem and gain more control over the way I tumble.

I first came to Deborah to help me deal with debilitating back pain, and I felt relief after just one lesson. The Alexander Technique has taught me to pay attention to how my body feels. Now I practice imagining myself as a marionette, allowing my neck to be free…the technique has helped me to relax and undo old habits that created tension and stress. Now I run better, I move better, and I feel better!

My goal in learning the Alexander technique with Deborah was simply to improve my posture. Years of working at the computer have taken their toll, and my neck and back were screaming. My posture has greatly improved and continues to improve as I practice. What stuns me still are the many side effects of the Alexander technique: calmness, energy, pain reduction, happiness. I’m left feeling more strength and have a more positive outlook. I’m so glad I chose Deborah; she is a wonderful teacher! Her terrific energy and a calm center, make lessons with her a joyful experience. Her techniques for working with varying scenarios are invaluable. I may come to a lesson scattered and stressed, but I always leave feeling centered and powerful. We don’t have to endure pain. I wish I’d come to Alexander training much earlier in life!

What feels like a life time of growth, began for me six months ago when I started studying the Alexander Technique with Deborah Lewis (three hours a week). My lessons have been invaluable as Deborah jumpstarted what feels like an internal revolution. I learned that there is a world of possibility and freedom all within myself. Deborah paved the way to an uncovering- that happiness and mindful embodiment is a choice. There are no words for me to describe the level of awakening I have experienced while studying with Deborah Lewis.

Working with Deborah Lewis via The Alexander technique has led to a great shift in how I live in my body.

As a result of bi-weekly sessions over the past couple months, I now feel more comfortable and physically at ease than I ever have.

Deborah and I work together on a handful of themes- i will name a few: how I relate to my cell phone (holding it with ease rather than tightening in the neck and throat.. And choosing when to engage with it– rather than allowing its buzzing and ringing to over-stimulate me thru out the day), how I project my voice when teaching classes, and sitting, standing and walking with ease. I have learned so much from Deborah and our sessions have become a bi-weekly event I look forward to.
It’s been very natural to integrate the Alexander technique. Into all aspects of living- physically, mentally and emotionally. Deborah is a real gem- I would sign up for whatever she is teaching!!
