The Alexander Technique
DEBORAH LEWIS
What is it?

The Alexander Technique is a profound and rich method for improving one’s physical, mental and emotional life because it addresses the causes of tension and pain rather than just the symptoms themselves. The results are long lasting and can be transformational. It has been employed successfully by countless people in myriad professions, from those of us who work at computers to musicians, athletes, actors, singers, and public speakers. The Alexander Technique has helped people with chronic back, neck and shoulder pain. It is very effective in dealing with emotional issues, such as anxiety, social and stage fright. The principles of the AT can be applied to all the situations humans are confronted with.

The technique is 120 years old and has proven to be extremely effective in getting rid of poor movement patterns and habits, the kind that over time cause rigidity and pain. The Alexander Technique been referred to as “The thinking man’s solution to pain.” It is neuromuscular educational method used for dealing with pain and can offer long lasting results and improvement in over all health.

Learning the Alexander Technique can reduce or eliminate pain, and teach you sustainable good posture. This can make everyday movements a pleasure instead of painful, and make you feel lighter, even enlivened and at ease even in stressful times.

I love learning the Alexander Technique with Deborah. She has a light but authoritative touch (literally and figuratively) and is an excellent teacher. I know I am standing, sitting, walking, running and moving with more height, space, stability and power, and our lessons have helped alleviate lower back, knee, and arm pain. Consciously integrating the elements of our lessons into my daily life has been most gratifying (I often hear Deborah’s voice encouraging me to be aware of my body and address my learned habits — neck free!), and I look forward to continuing my practice with her. Thank you, Deborah.
My Alexander lessons with Deborah proved to be highly worthwhile and of value to me. I feel in just 15+ sessions I began to undo some of the habits responsible for the severe tension I’d felt for so long at the base of my head, top of my neck. I worked with Deborah for 6-8 weeks, 2 sessions a week and it was in the regularity of showing up to the work that I began to bring a new awareness to the way that I move. Deborah is a skilled teacher and obviously believes fully in the work. I highly encourage anyone who is seriously interested in restoring the body’s natural alignment and undoing the age old habits that result in chronic pain, however mild or severe to work with Deborah on a regular basis. I feel comforted to know about this work and to know that I can go back to work with Deborah in the future if and when I need it!
My 17 year old son had a terrible accident, breaking his ankle while skate boarding and had to have surgery three times. He had a lot of pain and had a hard time walking. He started studying the Alexander Technique with Deborah Lewis as part of his recovery process, and worked with her for over a year while he was in recovery. We believe that our son healed from the injury and surgeries much more quickly because of his work with Deborah. He really enjoyed his twice weekly lessons, and in addition he found the technique made him feel more at ease and calm in general. Now he is back to having full use of his ankle, and he uses the technique while doing all kinds of challenging physical activities. He told me that it helps him to think clearly in the middle of a difficult set of moves in gymnastics, or when he is rock climbing. He says that he uses the technique in many situations in his life, and I have noticed that his posture is also greatly improved through the Alexander work. Deborah Lewis is a very warm, kind and dedicated Alexander Technique teacher and I highly recommend her.
